Dawn was a red wash in the London sky when Vivian Morley woke. She lay for a moment, drowsy with slumber, then stretched like a great white cat, lazily, enjoying the lethargy that was in her every muscle. It was good to be alive, to be fully alive as she was these days.

She owed this wonderful aliveness to Sir Stanley Hawkins. And she would owe him more than that, before she was done with him. If ever she came to that point, that is. Lying here and remembering him last night, as he had advanced on her with the whip in a hand and hot hate in his eyes, she trembled deliciously. What a fine pair they made, the society doctor and his nurse! If his patients knew what he was like, wielding the lash! She would wager his cold snip of a wife didn't know that side of him.

No, his wife knew only the correct gentleman, who spoke and ate and laughed with decorum. She could not even guess at the beast in him.

Sir Stanley Hawkins and Ellen would be leaving London soon. The more fool, she, to go away from her husband at a time like this. But Ellen Hawkins did not suspect what his nurse was plotting and planning behind her back. Vivian Morley wondered if she would care, really, even if she knew. To her way of thinking, Ellen Hawkins had no blood in her veins.

Did Ellen Hawkins have as much will power as she herself could boast? Even during that whipping last night, and the insanity of the man who caused it, she had held her tongue. Ah, he had raged and cursed, but she kept the secret of the cane from him.

It was so simple, really.

The murder weapon was only an excuse to bring him here. That had been her original intention, at least. Now it had become a game between them.

She should have thought of the cane sooner, and realized what it could do for her. It was not too late, however. She could use the threat of that weapon again and again with Sir Stanley Hawkins. Oh, but it was good to see the hate and the madness come into his face.

Her body wanted him back in her bedroom again, crazed with rage. She said aloud, "We must be patient. To be impetuous might mean losing him. There are ways of preventing that, but patience must be one of them. Aside from patience, there is—"

Her hand went hunting under her pillow. Her fingers closed on the key that she had taken from Sir Stanley's silver key chain last night as he lay exhausted on the bed. Bringing it out, she held it in front of her eyes.

There are many doors in life, and not all of them are made of wood and metal. A door was waiting somewhere for Vivian Morley to open. All her life she had known about it, but only now was she beginning to learn how to shape the key with which to open it to her hungers.
